Hands On Disaster Relief Update

By Kate | Permalink | No Comments | April 18th, 2007 | Trackback

Much has happened since I initially posted about Hands On Disaster Response (HODR), which has been working in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Reming.

While they expected to end the project at the end of March, there was an exciting development: the Scandinavian Children’s Fund (SCF), which was already involved in the relief effort, included in its mission the goal of re-building schools. The SCF is providing the materials but needs help with the labor; as HODR had capable and willing volunteers, the two organizations were able to work together.

As of March 29, it appears that the closing date of the HODR projects in the Philippines will be during the last week of April. Their results achieved include providing dry space for over 150 families via a tarping project, completing the rebuilding of three schools, one daycare and one chapel/community center (with at least one more school on the agenda before the project end date), and helping plant 1000 coconut seedlings.

While HODR’s involvement will be ending soon, some links you might find useful for future reference or comparative purposes include the page with links to their flikr photo galleries and the volunteer page. Hats off to Hands On Disaster Relief for several jobs well done.
