Peace Brigades International: Update

Posted By Kate On 13th April 2007 @ 14:51 In News | No Comments

Peace Brigades International, or PBI (find my post on it here), which sends volunteers to accompany local human rights workers in a handful of countries, has been on my radar for a while; recently June, a returned volunteer who worked in Colombia, contributed an insightful interview to the Volunteer Logue.

But what’s new? PBI is active in publicizing a number of events for those who have asked to be notified by email (like me). Here are a few of the events happening around now:

PBI is currently recruiting volunteers to work at various music festivals in June, July and August in different locations in the UK; volunteers receive free entry into the music festivals as well as (some) transport, food, drinks and a separate and safe camp site; they work … selling beer (!) for the Workers Beer Company, which is involved in raising money for the labour movement. For each volunteer hour worked, the WBC donates just under six Pounds to PBI. As I received this via email, there is no direct link; if you’re interested, use the UK PBI contact address. Act quickly, the deadline is soon!

They are also letting people know about a “Stop Violence Against Women, Demanding Justice in Guatemala and Mexico” event which will feature international speakers; it is organized by Amnesty International and will take place in London (May 3), Edinburgh (to be announced) and Glasgow (May 11) – contact Amnesty International UK for more information.
