Blogs You Should Know About: Gloria In Africa
By Kate | Permalink | No Comments | March 12th, 2007 | TrackbackGloria is a photographer from the US who attended a two-and-a-half week workshop in Uganda; you can read about a number of moving experiences (and see some beautiful photos) on her blog, Gloria in Africa. You can also learn about the 501 C3 organization Gloria established in the US - Change the Truth - to facilitate the donation of money to the school/orphanage her visit focused on in Kampala: St. Mary Kevin Orphanage Motherhood.
Gloria’s blog gives some background information on Uganda: “There are 24.7 million people living in Uganda. The population of those under 15 years of age is 13 million. Of those, 2.2 million have lost one or both parents to war or AIDS.” Though the prevalence of HIV is diminishing, the number of orphans increases because of the lag between infection, sickness, and death of the parent.
Don’t be dissuaded by these sobering statistics from reading through the blog; Gloria’s time in Uganda seems to be characterized by several adventures as well as positive experiences with local people and traditions.
Most of her time in Africa is chronicled in September and October, but there are other posts about this time as well. You can read an update on Change the Truth and get a preview of the handmade jewelry that will be sold to fundraise.
A thanks to Kendall’s Quest is in order for directing me to this blog.
