Help Publicize A Women’s Cause For Mother’s Day

Do something special for your mom on Mother’s Day (especially relevant if you’re in the US or one of the other countries celebrating mothers on Sunday, but certainly possible elsewhere) – and why not send an e-card featuring information about a good cause as well, or even make a donation. Sure, she may get a few additional emails about it or other related causes, but this means you can think of it as the gift that keeps on giving.

All kidding aside, the IRC is making available five different e-cards, three of which can be sent alone and two which you can send if you choose to make a donation. One features an award-winning photo of Sudanese women meeting for coffee at an IRC group, to talk and perhaps participate in English or literacy events. Within it is a link to an electronic petition you can sign urging governments to fund programs that prevent and respond to incidence of women and girls being victimized by violence during conflicts, and also programs that focus on recovery. There are also cards with pictures from Afghanistan and Chad which are available with donations.

Doctors Without Borders is another organization offering e-cards as a way of notifying someone that you have made a donation in their name. You can read about their medical care for women and children program here.

On a sidenote, if you’re interested in this organization as a medical or non-medical volunteer and live in New York or Chicago, there may be a recruitment information session near you in the near future – May 17 and 31 in New York, May 24 in Chicago – see the box in the upper left corner of the MSF-USA homepage for more information.

These are two organizations which let me know by email about their e-card/donation programs, but there are a number of equally awesome organizations/causes which have been featured on the Volunteer Logue that are smaller in scale but still are on the lookout for donations: Next Generation Nepal, Wildlife Direct, Change The Truth Fund, and The Midnight Special to name just a few. While these don’t necessarily focus on women, a donation to a relevant cause is still a fine way to honor your mom.
