Paul Newman: Donating To Charities…Through Salad Dressing

By Kate | Permalink | No Comments | March 19th, 2007 | Trackback

holelogo.gifPaul Newman started Newman’s Own, Inc. with his salad dressings twenty years ago and over time, the company has earned more than 175 million through selling dressings such as Creamy Ceaser and Lighten Up Balsamic Vinagrette (as well as a variety of other flavors of course). Today Newman’s Own is associated with donations to charity organizations.

Actually, Newman’s Own, Inc. makes no gift to charity, but Paul Newman, who receives all the profits and royalties, distributes that personally to the charities of his choice. On the website: “Since the inception of the company, it is our understanding that the total amount of those gifts to charity has been approximately $200 million.”

One charity – which Newman founded himself - is Hole in the Wall, which in eight locations organizes (US – 5, UK, Ireland, France 1 each) summer camps for children with cancer or other life threatening illnesses. None of the 13,000 children who attend each year pays for it. Find out about volunteering at Hole in the Wall camp here.

“The Association and each Hole in the Wall Camp is an independent 501(c)3 (or equivalent) charity responsible for raising the funds to support its own annual operating budgets and capital needs, and all are sustained entirely by charitable contributions from foundations, corporations, individuals, and organizations”

Newman’s own is also the exclusive provider of salad dressings at McDonald’s, an alliance through which the company sees as allowing it “to reach a much broader audience, attract new consumers and increase Paul Newman’s donations to charity.”
