Volunteer Peten News And The Rural Literacy Project

In its April newsletter, Volunteer Peten announced that the construction of a new community library – in connection with the Rural Literacy Project - has been completed thanks to the hard work of community members and international volunteers. The San Andreas Library houses over 1500 books and was expanded in order to meet the ever-increasing community demand.

Opening night drew more than 300 community members - and their next goal is to furnish the library with “8 large tables, 42 chairs, glass to finish the large librarian desk, a new computer, 3 large metal shelves, and frames for posters and prints.”

The Volunteer Peten website features various projects which often need volunteers (of which the rural literacy project is just one), information on a Spanish language school for foreigners, and general information about San Andres, Peten, Guatemala.

The group has a newsletter which goes out each month, and as you can see from the summary of their work in February, which:

“…included hosting school groups in the ecological park and providing environmental education programs, planting and weeding in the park, English classes in local schools, installing the new windows in the library, and nightly library activities.”

The Rural Literacy Project mentioned above has an interesting volunteer program; among other things, volunteers need to participate in fundraising before their departure and also read some of the books selected by the Project.
