Volunteer Placement Organization: Global Visions International (GVI)
By Kate | Permalink | No Comments | February 28th, 2007 | TrackbackGlobal Visions International is a British-based organization which places volunteers in “over 150 projects including challenging Marine Conservation and Wildlife Research expeditions in Africa and Latin America and volunteer teaching and wildlife projects in over 30 countries worldwide.”
You can search by duration, focus and region. Examples include working with elephants and communities both in Sri Lanka, where volunteers can work with the field scientists of the Sri Lankan Wildlife Conservation Society, “conducting surveys and ecological studies of the endangered Sri Lankan elephant, and assisting in human-elephant conflict resolution.” The team also “conducts biodiversity surveys in areas that have never been studied before.” This project can last from 2 – 12 weeks in duration, and they are direct about the location and living conditions: “…extremely remote… you will be at least 2 hours from the closest internet café, there is no electricity and only patchy mobile/telephone signals.” Two weeks costs $1360, six weeks, $2370. Included is accommodation, three meals a day, transport from a meeting point to the site, predeparture support and 24 hour support while volunteering.
Another project is in Honduras where volunteers “Assist in the building of energy efficient stoves for cleaner air and less wood consumption, promote agriculture to provide harvests for one family for one year, or help with livestock rearing.”
Twenty hours of one-on-one Spanish classes are included in the per-week price. Volunteers stay in a private room with a local family in “comfortable but basic” conditions; 3 meals a day are also included. The minimum stay is one week and the idea is that the volunteer will complete one specific project connected to one family in that week. Fees are $1250 for one week, $2450 for four.
GVI also offers its own TEFL training courses – two day (20 hours) and one month(100 hours, including six of observed teaching practice). “These courses train participants to teach oral English to indigenous and local populations where literacy levels may not be high” GVI also offers job placement for both voluntary and paid teaching work.
