Resource: World Volunteer Web

wvw6.gifThe World Volunteer Web is a creation of the UN Volunteers program and several partners, and has three main goals: to serve as an online reference point for information on worldwide volunteering, to provide tools and resources for related networking, and to increase and promote volunteerism.

In the take action section, you can browse organizations or search for specific types of opportunities. There’s also a volunteer blog, to which interested readers can contribute articles.

The resources portion includes a how to ( -volunteer, manage volunteers) section, a list of relevant periodicals, and links to a variety of policy documents and research reports.

There’s quite logically a section with news, but it also features viewpoints and volunteer stories.

A “countries” section is located on the left sidebar, where you can read reports connected to particular countries. There is, for example, a 35-page report on volunteerism in Bosnia Herzegovina, giving background information on the country, describing the current (at the time) civil society and volunteer situation, and explaining and graphically displaying the results of a volunteer questionnaire administered for the report. It’s interesting to note – and it fits with my experience in the country – that while there are a plethora of non-profit organizations, including a number of international ones, volunteer possibilities are not particularly developed. Information like this is highly useful for those interested in taking the initiative and finding or organizing their own volunteer situation.

This site has a surprising number of resources on a wide array of countries and issues; whatever your interest in volunteering, I’d encourage you to check it out.
