Online Resource: OneWorld.net
By Kate | Permalink | No Comments | April 17th, 2007 | TrackbackOneWorld.net is an excellent resource for those with an interest in all things international.
Features of the site include country guides, which
“offer an introduction to relevant sustainable development and human rights issues, with pointers to more detailed content” on a number of specific countries. Check out Romania’s to get an idea.
There are also non-profit job, a and volunteer listings – you can search by field or country. If you don’t find what you need there, you have a link to a list of other job sites.
Action alerts are another feature of OneWorld.net; one of the current action alerts links to a site inviting people to write and submit to their local newspaper an opinion piece on “constructive ways to respond to acts of hatred.” April 19 is the twelfth anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, and this action alert comes in the wake of various acts of terrorism throughout the world. (While the site linked to makes no mention of who it is inviting to write, the One World site summary says the organization is “encouraging Americans” to do so. I’d say, if you’ve got an opinion and the motivation to write – investigate the site and go for it.)
Finally, if you have a region or country in mind, you might use the NGO directory to find out which organizations are working there; one possibility is to research their work and come up with your own innovative way to make a contribution – in person/n the field or from home, using whatever unique skills or motivation you may have.
